We should install democracy in Iraq: We’ve also been told an invasion of Iraq is necessary to promote democracy. But according to Michael Klare, professor of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College and author of “Resource Wars,” that is another falsehood. In the 1980s, when Iraq was the enemy of our enemy, Iran, the United States eagerly embraced Hussein’s dictatorship. Donald Rumsfeld even personally met Hussein in 1983 to give him secret satellite data on Iranian military positions.

Potential Introduction for essay

So I actually wrote this a while ago but never thought to put it on my blog

It was somewhere between September 2002 and February 2003, when it was obvious that the US was going to enter Iraq, that signs, bumper stickers, posters, sharpie graffiti, and other ways of conveying the statement “no blood for oil” began to show up. Now I was no supporter of the war, however I did not feel that the war was about oil or even money at all. Of course I knew that the president had massive ties to oil but I always thought the war was about something else. I thought the war was partly that of (revenge), that president Bush had always wanted to do what his father couldn’t; take out Saddam Hussein. Also I figured that the war was based off the administrations lack of knowledge on the Islamic world. While we were all being told that Iraq was supporting al-Qaeda, me with my small amount of knowledge on the Middle East that stems mostly from following Israel, knew this could not be true because Hussein and bin Laden ascribed to rivaling forms of Islam and would likely never have put their differences aside to attack America. I figured, yes oil may have played a small part in President Bush’s decision to invade Iraq, but there was just something inside of me that knew the war was not about oil. However the further I researched the question “Why is America in Iraq” the more and more it became evident that oil was possibly the most significant reason America invaded Iraq. It looks as though my naïve assumptions from five to six years ago were (way?) wrong

So I like this one because it deals with the “mis speaks” that president Bush said which ended up getting us into the war in Iraq which is sort of where I am focusing this essay. I think the bottom part where the words are printed are of the utmost importance to my essay. I also like the fine print that starts with FYI.

this was a speech by Ron Paul where he talks about the real reasons he believes we are in Iraqas well as problems with the US Middle East Policy. This raised a lot of quesitons for me and was probably the reason that I wanted to further explore this topic. Definately check this out, it could also be a good source for you

Freewrite 1

             After completing the unit one assignment I have a few good ideas on what I want to do for my unit two assignment. In my unit one assignment I rhetorically analyzed a cartoon by Mike Peters. The cartoon dealt with American imperialism and America’s actions in Iraq. At the end of the essay I generated quite a bit of inquiries, some of the inquiries I came up with dealt with imperialism. One of the more pressing questions that I asked was “if the United States is becoming an empire, will it fall, when will it fall, and how will it fall like all empries that have come before it.” Initially I though this was the that I would like to start with in order to begin my unit two assignment. However I decided to go in a different direction and pursue another, broader, inquiry that I brought up in my unit one essay, and that question is “Why are we in Iraq?”

            What really spurred me onto exploring this question was one of the sources that I used in my first assignment. It was a speech or document by Congressman Ron Paul entitled Why We Fight. The document was really a critique of American policy in the Middle East and America’s involvement in Iraq. The document talked about what seemed to be the United States and the Bush administration’s true reasons for going into Iraq. One of the reasons Paul mentioned was oil. I had always thought that oil had played a role in the war but always felt that the decision to go into Iraq was one of stupidity on the part of the administration more so than the quest for oil…perhaps I was wrong.

            So I think my direction for this assignment will be somewhere along the lines of answering the question “Why are we in Iraq?” using evidence from government sources outside of the Bush administration as well as evidence from non-government sources. Also I think it would be useful to take the evidence and statements made by the Bush administration and see what truth was behind them, and analyze them using other sources from inside and outside the Administration.

            I want to research this topic because there hasn’t been a clear answer as to why America is in Iraq and the current administration has never given the United States a clear answer as to why we are there. I don’t intend to answer this question completely because to get the real answer would probably require injecting our current president with truth serum. But I do intend to present a few different answers and maybe even come to my own conclusion. Not really sure but we’ll see how it goes.
